THE PERSONAL SIDE OF METER READING

There are many different options for utilities to gather consumption information. There are ERT meters – Encoded Receiver Transmitters – that enable a meter reader to get the information they need from some distance away using radio technology.
There are ‘smart’ meters that send this information to local receiving stations, thus doing away with the need for meter readers at all.
In some areas of the province, however, meters are read the way they have always been read – by someone gaining physical access to the meter and recording the information. The information is entered into a handheld device.
When reading manually, a single meter reader can attend as many as 600 sites per day. The location of the meter, gates and other obstructions affect the quantity of sites a meter reader can reach each day.
We ensure the meter reads are obtained within the required read window. This way the information proved to the utility is properly synced to the customers billing schedule. Not meeting this read window requirement in not an option. Otherwise, the utility will have to estimate a customer's bill which is not ideal.
We maintain a service performance rate in excess of 99%. Our crew wear appropriate identified clothing and are fully trained on handheld units. They as well, receive training on how to deal professionally and respectfully with the interactions with a customer that may occur.
Dataco can provide reads, move-in move-out reads, and one time confirmation reads. Meter readers are trained and proficient in Itron, Sensus, and Neptune handheld readers.
